RLS Treatment with Implant Acupuncture
Between 5 and 10 percent of the population suffer from Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). This is a progressive neurological disease for which no cure has been found yet.
Problems of immediate importance are dysaesthesias such as twinges, burning or tingling sensations or convulsions in the legs, feet or more seldom arms. In additon to these problems, patients often suffer from an unnatural urge to be active and inner restlessness. Typically, these symptoms mostly appear in the evening or at night. That is why patients complain about massive sleep disorders.
The causes of Restless Legs Syndrome have still not been identified. However, the neurotransmitter dopamine that is reduced due to a dysfunction of the dopaminergic system in the brain plays a central role here. Consequently, those medicinal preparations are mostly used in a medical therapy that the body either directly transforms into dopamine (levodopa) or that have similar effects as dopamine (dopamine antagonists). In rare cases, opioids are used.
In the years 2008/2009, Dr. Kreisel carried out an observational study in his clinic on the effectiveness of implant acupuncture in patients with Restless-Legs Syndrome. An implantation of titanium needles or Resomer® needles into certain reflex points around the ear or the scalp is supposed to stimulate both the cell metabolism and the body's own dopamine secretion and to positively influence the course of the disease.
All patients treated by Dr. Kreisel suffered from a fairly serious or serious RLS. The course of the disease was recorded regularly over a period of 6 months. The study evaluation revealed that in a high percentage of the patients the symptoms improved after the treatment, in some cases, even a reduction of RLS medicinal preparations was possible. Meanwhile, this therapy method has been expanded to the so-called Frequency-modulated Implant Acupuncture®.
